A few weeks ago I was both surprised and blessed by Autumn Roth, one of our young people. As Autumn was leaving worship, she asked, “What do the letters INRI mean that are hanging above Jesus in drawings of him on the cross?” This is an excellent question! INRI are the Latin initials for the title Pilate had posted over Jesus on the cross as stated in John 19:19-20. ”Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus the Nazerene, the King of the Jews. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.”
Special thanks to Autumn for her excellent question! She reminds me and hopefully all of us, of the importance of life-long learning and what a gift it is to be able to engage our faith regularly. Jesus, who laid down his life for all, loves you today and always!
